Shock work...

Like forks i advise servicing a shock between 20 and 25 hour use for moto x use for intermediate to expert riders, but if your really on it, a little more often as the oil will be worked much harder.  Enduro riders can go a little longer especially when good oils are used, unless your seals are leaking.
Remember to go faster the rear suspension puts the engine power to the ground, Getting more power form you engine will not make you faster if the suspension can not keep the rear wheel in contact with the ground.
Things to look at before you get a re-valve or service.
If your not happy with your suspension then a re-valve is most likely what you may need, but first.

1, Make sure the springs are right for your weight.
2, Make sure you have required sag.
3, Make sure clicker settings are not different to what they should be.
4, If shock was ok but changed you might need a service but you should also check your swing arm and linkage for seized bearings.

Shock problems.....
Losing oil or gas will give uncontrolled damping in compression and rebound, clicker will have little effect.
Shocks in need of service don't work as well and tend to kick a little more.
Shocks going soft could be piston ring problems or shim problems, shims can bend or break giving oil free flow as well as broken piston rings like the picture above std KTM piston ring 2012 allows oil to bypass around shim stacks.
